Document Summary
A pattern of thinking and interacting that is unique to each individual and remains relatively consistent over time and across situations. Psychodynamic: developed by sigmund freud, explains personality and behaviour in terms of internal drives and forces, three components of personality: Id: unconscious; strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives; operates on pleasure principle and demands immediate gratification. Superego: partly conscious, partly unconscious; strives to live up to internalized ideals and desires to follow the rules, personality is shaped by conflicts between the id and the superego; conflicts are mediated by ego. Defense mechanisms hide things from conscious awareness. Humanistic: developed by rogers and maslow, emphasizes the role of free will and self-development. Circumstances that stand in the way of self-actualization can influence personality and behaviour: rogers proposed that to become our true selves, people should receive unconditional positive regard from others, maslow"s hierarchy of needs. Is part of personality, and can be changed.
