Document Summary

Gestalt principles of perceptual organization: gestalt german for pattern, shape or form, top down processing, argue that the wholes we perceive are more than/different from the sum of their parts, figure ground relations, organize stimuli into a foreground figure & a background, reference optical illusions in power point. Perception involves hypothesis testing: recognizing a stimulus implies that we have a perceptual schema, a mental representation or image to compare it with, therefore perception is an attempt to make sense of stimulus input based on knowledge & experience, each perception is essentially an hypothesis about the nature of the object/the meaning of the sensory information. Texture: texture/grain of object appears finer as distance increases, clarity, objects easier to see closer than when far away, relative size, 2 objects side by side, larger object deemed closer, smaller object deemed farther away, motion parallax, when moving, nearby objects appear to move faster in opposite direction than those farther away.
