Nonverbal communication- intentional or unintentional messages expressed through nonspoken physical and behavioral cues: majority of meaning exchanged during interpersonal interactions are nonverbal, nonverbal skill associated with high self-esteem, perceptions of attractiveness, popularity, and relationship satisfaction. Is: expressed through multiple channels, more ambiguous, guided by rules, greater meaning, influenced by culture, influenced by gender. Verbal and nonverbal combined: used jointly to create interpersonal communication, create meaning, accentuate/complement, contradict, regulate, reiterate, substitute. Nonverbal codes- the different means used for transmitting info nonverbally: 8 distinct codes, kinesics- visible body movements. Emblems- represent specific verbal meanings (ex. middle finger) Speech rate: haptics- use of touch to communicate. Public (12"+: proxemics- communicating through physical space, chronemics- use of time to communicate. What does being late communicate: physical appearance- communication through visible attributes such as hair, clothing, body type, etc. Facial symmetry: artifacts- objects we possess that influence how we see ourselves and express our identity to others, environment- physical features of environment.
