Weren"t they technically under the willing rule of the emperor? (not really, it was not a democracy. ) However, these living conditions are shitty, and thus people under these conditions may choose to die, rather than live. These gave way to decisions of pro-life or pro-choice: pro-choice: a women has the choice to end an unwanted pregnancy. This is based because women have free and have certain rights, such as the ability to control her life. The choice of pregnancy falls under this basis. In addition, there are many terrible consequences and tragedies if the right to choose is denied. There are arguments that the new born fetus is actually a person, and that abortion is not the killing of a person because it is not yet a person. This does sound like a pro-choice position, but is not actually. Many believe that women have the right to freedom, but do not have the right to end another life.
