Document Summary

Social psychology: the scientific study of how people affect and are affected by others. Helps us make sense of the diversity of human behavior. Helps us understand basic principles of social influence, as well as many other principles of social behavior. Introduction of textbooks: 1908 william mcdougall and edward ross each developed a book called social psychology. In the 1950s and 1960s psychology was divided into two camps: behaviorism: theoretical approach that seeks to explain behavior in terms of learning principles, without reference to inner states, thoughts, or feelings. (ex. Reward and punishment) observable actions were focused on and studied using the scientific method: freudian psychoanalysis: theoretical approach that seeks to explain behavior by looking at the deep unconscious forces inside the person. By the 1970s and 80s social psychology found its own way, using scientific approaches to measure behavior but also trying to study thoughts, feelings, and other inner states scientifically.
