Mind and body: mind brain identity theory: this materialism identifies the mind with the brain and identifies mental states, processes and events with the physical state, processes and events occurring in the brain, functionalism: a form of materialism that identifies our mental states with the functional roles occupied by or functions (jobs) performed, physical states of the brain. Physical energy is physical because there are laws behind it: the indiscernibility of identicals: if a=b then if a has a certain property (characteristic) at a given time, b, must also have that property (characteristic) at that time, nothing can be different from itself in anyway, identity at a time: it tells us that if a=b then whatever is true of a at a given time is also true of b at that time, a must be identical for b for them to be the same.
