Has two main functions: categorizes and describes mental disorders, second allows researchers to talk to each other about mental disorders using common language. Dsm groups together disorders that have similar symptoms suggesting a common cause and can possibly be similarly treated categories in the dsm: The dsm does not provide treatment plans for disorders, only describes a pattern of symptoms so we turn to models of psychopathology. Psychological disorders may be due to malfunction in brain activity. Brain can malfunction because it is physically damaged or abnormal activity of chemicals in brain known as neurotransmitters. Points to genetics, disease, stress, and nutrition to explain malfunctioncauses are physical.
