Document Summary
Objects can elicit affect that is not a result of conscious beliefs or knowledge. Attitudes can be based on 1+ of 3 kinds of info: cognitive (beliefs about target, affective (how it makes you feel, behavioural (how you behave towards it) This affect does not come from conscious awareness that the object has +ve or ve qualities: still influences evaluations of target (attitude) Tendency for repeated exposure to an object, even w/out reinforcement, to increase liking for object. Evaluative conditioning: pairing something w/ unpleasant stimuli leads to unpleasant affect. We all have attitudes that were influenced by conditioning (ie; phobias) Tend to feel +vely about things we are familiar w/ Repeated exposure leads to greater liking even when there is no reinforcement. Mita, dermer & knight (1977: familiarity w/ faces, participants have photos taken. Other studies have shown even more convincingly that conscious recognition is not necessary for mere exposure effect to occur.
