Crime prevention is: the anticipation, recognition, and appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of action to remove or reduce it. ". Policing emerged as a strategy to solve" crime, but now we see that nothing really works. Another misguided view is that criminals will stay criminals and they will not change. Central tenant of crime prevention [cp: public safety cannot remain in the exclusive domain of the cjs, cops, courts, corrections cannot cope with crime. There is a need to look at root causes, such as structural inequality. All citizens are encouraged to take responsibility in making crime prevention a part of their daily routine. The social institutions that are most central to promoting crime prevention are families, schools, communities, the labour market, and the police. Crime prevention responsibility encompasses society"s basic institutions and a range of governmental and non-government groups.
