HONR 1101 Lecture Notes - Agathon
Document Summary
Agathon: to begin, i must admit that i found the second half of symposium to be more complex and had difficulty understanding a lot of it. That being said, i will start with the impression that i got of agathon. Before his speech, he bantered back and forth with socrates for a while before phaedrus kindly interrupts and asks agathon to get on with his speech. This interplay between socrates and agathon gives me mixed signals. From my understanding and interpretation of this little exchange between them, it seems like socrates is complimenting agathon for his confidence in delivering his play and he is encouraging him to make a great speech. It almost seems flirtatious, but i could definitely be reading it wrong. Anyhow, the way that agathon is recognized by socrates and the other characters after his speech is also noteworthy.
