Document Summary
Leviathan was published in 1651, revised in 1668, and burned in. He was worried because leviathan disagreed with both sides. Hobbes did not agree with the divine right theory, so monarchists did not like him. He also did not like the anglican church, wrote against them. Gives a materialist and material picture of humans, did not believe they had souls. The leviathan is an earthly creature, not a divinely created one. Leviathan sold very well, but hobbes" name was turned into an insult. Leviathan became the standard for all philosophical writing in the english language. Emphasizes the importance of precisions with terms, clarity with the points, and rigor in argument. Starts with a well defined term, and goes from there. Thought the cause of the civil war was the spread of false ideas. One was that government must be limited by a law to protect people"s freedom. Leviathan was an effort to settle different contentious political views.
