In 1840, women and young girls were mainly industrial workers: masculinisation of labour force, married women least likely to be employed - 6% married women were employed, while, 40% of single women were employed: cult of domesticity applied to upper and middle class women, shifts in the modes of production, rise of feminism - two underlying causes in changes in labour force participation. 1960"s and 1970"s increase in availability of jobs - fulfillment through work.
