Document Summary

January 30, 2013 - lecture 9: plants conquer land/bryophytes. Most live in terrestrial environments ex: deserts, grasslands & forests. Some have returned to aquatic habitats: most of these to fresh water, a few to marine water. 4 main groups of plants: non-vascular plants, e. g. mosses, seedless vascular plants, e. g. ferns, gymnosperms, e. g. conifers, angiosperms, e. g. flowering plants. Reminder: kingdom plantae shares a common ancestor w/ the green algae. Within green algae, plants most closely related to charophytes (look at diagram ) Make cellulose microfibrils of the cell wall. Are liner in non-charophycean algae: structure of the sperm resembles the sperm of charophytes. But only for those plants w/ flagellated sperm: presence of phragmoplast during cell division. Helps construct cell plate between incipient cells, which goes on to become new cell wall: reminder: kingdom plantaeshares a common ancestor with the green algae within green algae, plants most closely related to charophytes why do we think this?fig.
