GEOG 1F91 Lecture Notes - Outwash Plain, Proglacial Lake, Isostatic Depression
Document Summary
Depositional processes: deposits left by ice sheets, stratified, unstratified. Moraines: unstratified drift, terminal, interlobate (between two lobes of ice, recessional (might pause, summer vs. winter, oak ridges interlobate moraine. Eskers: esker, really stratified, a former stream. Till plains: unstratified, also, drumlinized till plain. In isostatically formed depressions ahead of the retreating ice front: heavy ice pushed down the landscape, melts away, landscape takes a while to reform (like memory foam, proglacial lake forms in isostatic depression. The nature of soil: a natural surface layer, contains living matter, can support plants, consists of, matter in all 3 states (solid, liquid, and gas, organic (humus) and mineral matter, water and air. Soils: the formation of soil is impacted by, vegetation, climate, temperature, parent material, time, factors in soil development clorpt, cl -> climate. Controls soil development through further chemical/biological activity: o -> organisms. Roots control moisture, stabilize: r -> relief. Aspect controls microclimate: p -> parent material.
