If a ewe"s lamb is born dead, she will steal another ewe"s lamb. : cattle, majority do not leave herd to calve, choose dry, elevated areas with shelter, heritability of maternal behavior is low, angus more maternal than herefords. If contact between cows and calves is delayed for 5 hours post partum, 50% of calves will be rejected: calves can recognize their dams but make many errors when trying to recognize them in a large crowd, bull calves are weaned sooner than heifer calves. : horses, length of time between waxing of udder and foaling is variable, postparturient behavior, licking and sniffing used for bonding. Humans wean foals from mare at 4-6 months: clinical problems, foal rejection/attack on foal. : cats, choose cave-like place to birth, most prefer solitude, some content only when owner is present. Need quiet during birth: kittens suckle within 1-2 hours, by 2nd day, kittens have teat order, communal nests, frequently move kittens to new nests.
