Deviance is not necessarily a criminal act. All crimes are considered deviant but not all deviance is considered a crime. Criminology is therefore a subset of deviance. Norms change over time and space, one part of the country may find something deviant that another aprt of the country doesn"t. All formal and informal rules of conduct for membership in a group. Most people conform most of the time. Membership in society is principally a question of acceptance. Within sociology it is taken as axiomatic (assumed) that most people desire acceptance in some form. This is not the police but is generally your peers. How someone is treated as a result of someone"s bizarre behavior. These are so powerful they can make us change our behavior because we crave social acceptance.
