Although media is apparently free, they are able to control people"s thoughts through the operation of five filters : the side, concentrated ownership, owner wealth and profit orientation of the dominant mass media firms, the reliance of media on advertising as their primary income source, the dependency of the media on information provided by business, government and experts funded and approved by these sources, flak that is, the ability of corporations and governments to discipline media by threatening expensive lawsuits in response to critical coverage, mobilization against threats then communism, today terrorism to serve as a national secular religion and ideological control mechanism (means by which to unite the people of a country: to rally against a common threat/enemy. )
