Psychology 3190F/G Lecture Notes - Eleanor Rosch
Document Summary
Category: collection of things that go together in some way. Eleanor rosch: not a single level of categorization, but three levels of organization, in hierarchal relationship. The most preferred category by humans is the basic level, which is easy to find out what it is for any type of stimulus. This is because the superordinate level has a high accuracy and low predictive power. The subordinate level has a low accuracy but a high predictive power. With the basic level in between, it is also learned easily. The level of expertise also has an effect on the level of categorization, where when there is a high level of expertise we tend to go to the more accurate subordinate level. Novice med students: diagnose based on superficial characteristics. Expert doctors: diagnose based on deep structures. Some levels of categories are better than others due to family resemblance.
