Bilingualism is competence in two languages 4 areas of competency: comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading. Bilingual children differentiate in their playing, can tell the difference. Delay time from universal to language learning narrowing; 9 months for monolingual english- acquiring children; bilingual children are delayed, several months longer for them to be narrowing in on the two languages they are learning. Even though they can segmentation at the same time and know they can differentiate the input languages from non-input languages, the actual pruning of contrasts that are no relevant is delayed do not know why. One word for one referent = mutual exclusivity. Bilingual, then getting double for everything essentially children may overcome this because have separate lexicons for the languages, then each word belongs to only one lexicon for one language. Translation equivalents appears at the beginning but rare, then becomes large percentage of language.
