Food is any substance that provides nutrients necessary for growth and life. Why do we eat particular foods? (maslow"s theory: physical need for survival, social need for security, belongingness/ conformity, comfort, rituals, status, self realization/ willingness to experiment, health. Food & food habits best understood within the context of culture: ethnicity and religion primary concepts, important not to stereotype all people in a cultural group as being exactly alike. Societies differ in how edible vs inedible defined. Delicacies in one society unacceptable to another. Culture = adaptation to environment + knowledge + traditions + beliefs + values which are developed, learned and shared by society members. Remember food fulfills many needs other than nourishment: Social (affection, rewards, punishment, rebellion, business, attention, festivals, feasts) Socioeconomic and political system (subsidies, excess production, rationing, govt. policy for safety or labeling) Place of residence (urban vs rural vs region) Religion (restrictions vs none e. g. seventh day adventists, judaism, islam, hinduism.
