Reasons to study motivation: motivation became more important in contemporary organizations due to the need for increased productivity to be globally competitive & rapid changes. Stable rules are being replaced by the need for flexibility and attention to customers need initiative, which depends on motivation: there"s no all-purpose motivation theory. A good set of theories: recognizes human diversity as the same conditions don"t motivate everyone. 1: explains how some people are self-motivated, while others need external motivation, recognizes the social aspect of humans; motivation is affected by how we see others, motivation: extent to which persistent effort is directed toward a goal. They think their performance is controlled by environment: occurs only under very limited conditions and are easily avoidable. The 4 skills are sequential steps that form a hierarchy. (1 = lowest: ei is especially important for job performance of workers with lower levels of cognitive skills ability.
