Marx: capitalists use force or coercion to dominate working class (police, military) Gramsci: they also manipulate ideas as a subtle form of control. Domination: (coercive control) physical and violent coercion to maintain social boundaries and enforce social rules is needed by the state when hegemony isn"t working. Hegemony: (consensual control) domination through ideological control and consent individuals voluntarily take on the ideals of the ruling class.
