In effecting a state of constancy, homeostasis requires feedback control systems that regulate cellular function and integrate the function of the different body systems. It produces a cycle in which the initiating stimulus produces more of the same. Corticotropin-releasing factor: crf is a hormone found in both the hypothalamus and in extra hypothalamic structures, such as the limbic system and brain stem. Immune responses: immune cells such as monocytes and lymphocytes can penetrate the blood brain barrier and take up residence in the brain, where they secrete chemical messengers called cytokines that influence the stress response. Chapter 41: disorders of endocrine control of growth and metabolism. Adrenal androgens: synthesized by zona reticularis and that zona fasciculata of the cortex. Mineralocorticoids: regulate potassium and sodium levels and water balance, they are produced in zona glomerulosa, an outer layer of cells of the adrenal cortex. Pathophysiology: stress and adaptation: the glucocorticoid hormones appear to be involved directly or indirectly in emotional behavior.
