Language, culture, freedom: hegemony, linguistic constraints on thought, the limits of freedom. Example: the history of love: a historically situated concept, ancient greek: eros and agape, medieval troubadours: love outside marriage, developing since about 1450: bourgeois (middle class) love, the precondition for marriage. Three views of hegemony: manufacturing consent (chomsky, conformity and resistance, incorporation. Hegemony: view 1 -manufacturing consent: noam chomsky on the news media, filters on the production of the news in a free society, for example: flak , not a deliberate conspiracy. Hegemony: view 2 - conformity and resistance: language and cultural products may have hegemonic content, but the hegemonic content is always only partly accepted, partly, it is resisted.
