Document Summary

Modern societies are seen as human-made: in pre-modern societies people believed that the society was given to them by. If we made society, we can change it. Society is understood as a project: something that we make and re-make. The myth of progress: modern people believe that the modern period is the achievement of evolution, society can improve and perfect itself, people are morally obligated to make their societies better. All modern societies are revolutionary societies: are in a state of constant flux and change as their members attempt to improve and perfect. Psychology of the individuals who make up the society: an ideology provides a vision of what the society should look like, every element of society and not just one part. Ex: a healthcare debate is not an ideology in itself, but discussions of particular issues can open up onto ideological debates: our own society is a revolutionary society.
