Document Summary
Many people try to fit in with the majority so they will not be singled out for ridicule or treated negatively by others. Stigma is the unusual characteristics that engenders negative evaluations: stigma makes individuals as deviant, flawed, spoiled or generally undesirable , stigma encompasses more familiar situations where prejudice is shown (i. e racial, religious, gender, age, sexual orientation) Can also cover any physical, behavioural, psychological marker that elicits negative evaluations from society: 3 types of stigma developed: Abominations of body (physical deformities, being overweight, etc. ) Tribal stigmas of race, nation and religion (prejudice against another race) Individuals with external threats (such as prejudice) show stronger ingroup identification: confirmed effect in jewish people, african americans, and women. High identifiers derive much of their self-esteem from the identifications as a group member. More likely to seek collective strategies against group threat.
