Capitalism failed and were not able to provide enough jobs for people. One country people looked for socialism was soviet union. Use power of state to accomplish those goals. Russia was 2nd to united states in steel production. Flip side of propaganda was terror- anyone who resisted was called a traitor and sent to a labor camp. Peasants suffered from this- largest group- because they had no work. Collectivization of agriculture was one of the first things. Wanted all small farms to be one big farm- industrilizations. Peasants resisted this because they didn"t want to give up their land so they sabotage this by burning crops instead of giving them up. Stalin said any peasant who did this was an enemy of the state and must be executed. 5 million people die in 1st year after collectivization, terror did not stop. Purge trials- many people that belonged to any other movement were put on trail and executed.
