Document Summary

Deviance focuses on the act, what someone does. Stigma focuses on the person, who someone is. Is any act that will invoke social sanctions. Social sanctions are various ways society tries to control their members" behavior. Internalization of norms teach right from wrong, but is not always 100% effective: gossip and social approbation- with gossip, talk about someone but always has a way of coming back around. Social approbation is where we show our disapproval to someone"s face; facial expressions, verbally etc. Shunning is a form of social approbation and is the act of refusing to associate with said person: economic sanctions- boycotts are a form, because refusing to do business will cause it to be harder to make money. Fines are a form because it requires someone to reach a standard: legal sanctions-can prohibit an act and give a penalty for it. Authorize government to use force against someone to control their behavior.
