Document Summary

Sensory memory has a large capacity but the information is lost very quickly. If you don"t pay attention to the sensations around you, then those things won"t make it into your short-term memory. Information is lost from your short-term memory in about 20 seconds, unless you do something else to keep the information active. Complex data is moved into the long-term memory. The capacity is so long that we don"t know if memories last forever or not. Long-term memory could influence sensory memory and things can completely bypass short-term memory. We usually talk about sensory memory in vision or hearing, mostly because it"s easy. Sm holds information in its literal form, giving perceptual processes time to work. Segner tied the coal to a wheel and spun it. He accidentally stumbled upon how our sensory memory persists and fills in missing information. People who are dyslexic have a longer sensory memory, which is what makes reading difficult for them.
