Lecture 5: childbirth and the perinatal environmental. Stage 1 begins when contractions are 10 15 minutes apart; the cervix is fully dilated at 10cm by the end of this stage. Stage 2 is when delivery occurs; the head passes through the cervix. Stage 3 is when the placenta is delivered it"s just as big as the baby mehn : labour and delivery medication. Too much pain can create stress/complications for the baby and loss of blood flow can occur so medications are administered to alleviate symptoms. They do, however, have their own side effects such as the baby being sluggish, having an irregular heartbeat, and trouble sucking after delivery: demerol is administered 2-3 hours prior to delivery; can cause a drop in. Prior to the 1900s, childbirth was commonly taken care of at home. In canada, most births are done at home with reports of more comfort and relaxation.
