Chapter 3 protein structure and function there are 20 types of amino acids, all have common structure and amino group (nh3) and carboxyl. O=c-o & h and an r group- functional group. Function within cell: catalysis- (enzyme) reduces activation energy required for a rxn, defence- antibodies are proteins, help destroy diseases and bacteria, signaling- proteins are involved in carrying and receiving signals from cell to cell in the body. Glucagon is a small protein that binds to protein receptors to signal the release of glucose into bloodstream: structure- compose body components such as hair, fingernails and define shape of cells. Structural protein in blood keeps them flexible and in disc like shape: transport- transport proteins, allow particular molecules to enter and leave cell. Many polypeptides that interact to form a single structure. They induce normal proteins to change their shape to altered form.
