Chapter 3: social perception: perceiving and understanding others. Nonverbal communication: behavior influenced by mood motivation to understand mood in others, nonverbal communication- communication between individuals that does not involve the content of spoken language. It relies instead on an unspoken language of facial expressions, eye contact, and body language still conveys meaning. Irrepressible- difficult to control- so that even when others try to conceal their inner feelings from us, these often leak out in many ways through nonverbal cues. Percent of communication: mehrabian 7% verbal; 38% paralanguage (use of voice); 55% nonverbal, argyle 30% verbal; 70% nonverbal. Problems with studying nonverbal communication: (1) nonverbal cues can be ambiguous (unclear meaning) Culture, context, degree of intention, not appropriate: (2) nonverbal cues are continuous. Hard to tell when they stop; cant analyze: (3) nonverbal cues are multi-channel. Many different body parts; can miss something. Subconscious interpretation- right brain (holistic) vs. left brain (logical process: (4) nonverbal cues are culture bound.
