Document Summary
Whereas before, they may have described themselves in terms of height and physical abilities, now they are focusing more on psychological differences between themselves and others. This is because they are more capable of abstract thinking than younger children so their descriptions of the self become more abstract. (1) children realize they are good at some things and not so good at others. When we are trying to measure our abilities in some area, we tend to compare ourselves to others who are similar. Whereas self-concepts are more dispassionate, fact-based evaluations, self-esteem tends to be more emotion-based. Obviously, our different evaluations of the self can affect our overall sense of self-esteem; however, not all evaluations are considered equally important. For example i have the grace of a deranged rhino. Earlier in childhood, our sense of self-esteem is fairly global. If we feel good about ourselves, we tend to think we"re good in all different areas.
