The trial of the accused is merely a slideshow, the trial of the investigation is the main event . Are all scenes crime scenes: coroner investigations, office of the fire marshal, ministry of labour, special investigations unit. Why do we need to manage crime scenes: allow full investigation, documentation of evidence, collection of physical evidence, admissibility in court. Physical evidence shows us: that a crime has been committed, key elements of the crime, corroborate statements. Crime scene management (initial response): preservation of life, locate suspects/witnesses, protect the scene, record/recall, time, persons present, scene details. The suspect will leave something behind and take something away. The first officers that arrives at the scene. How do we ensure admissibility of evidence: continuity. How do we prove continuity: physical presence. Threats of physical harm: scene tape, seals. Placed in areas least likely touched by the suspect. Unless looking for trace evidence: locks/barriers.
