Discourse analysis explores means with which the discourse can give legitimacy and meaning to social practices and institutions. Take the text; analyze it in context; who is the source of the message; what is the target audience; etc. Most interpretivist approach we have taken so far. Focus on meaning people give to someone"s actions. Possible to compare across different instances/forms (movies, magazines, books, etc). Plan ahead for answers you can get, results it can give you: can use quantitative methods. Apart from publication of results, ethics aren"t a big deal since newspaper articles, movies, magazines are already out there: no interview effect/heisenberg effect, no consent needed. Not very flexible have a set criteria: increasing flexibility decreases rigour.
