Freedoms help people to become informed about democratic choices. Not just a system but a relationship between leaders, citizens, and other leaders. Set of rules about how the political system operates that makes sure the various institutions have limits to their powers. Ensures basic rights of citizens are recognized. About people and how they treat each other democracy is at risk when people don"t respect. Democracy can be reversed, paralyzed, interrupted, overthrown, etc. in face of economic crisis: greece, us, france, india. Must be compromise: people have to agree to disagree with their opponents in some areas. Must have a highly sophisticated economy to be a democracy. Crisis of leadership can make way for democracy e. g. , spain had an authoritarian regime until 1975: crisis made an opening for the building of democracy, and eventually elections were held that lead to a more open system. Solidarity won the elections for parliament and eventually presidency.
