The big picture: why we need innate immunity. Humans carry ~2 kg microbes (mainly bacteria) in digestive system and ~200 gm on outer surfaces. The expansion and differentiation of effector cells from the acquired immune response takes 3 5 days to generate. Pathogens can replicate substantially during this time and therefore the immune system needs a rapid response to contain the infection until the acquired response can be generated. Innate immunity (immediate: 0 4 hours): infection recognition by preformed, nonspecific and broadly specific effectors removal or infectious agent. Early induced innate response (early: 4 96 hours): infection recruitment of effector cells (monocytes, neutrophils, dendritic cells) recognition of pamps, activation of effector cells and inflammation removal of infectious agent. Adaptive immune response (late: >96 hours): infection transport of antigen to lymphoid organs recognition by na ve b and t cells clonal expansion and differentiation to effector cells removal of infectious agent.
