Infrastructure inadequate: threatened fundamental values & institutions, cities were terrible. Cities unprepared for influx embodied all the social injustices people lost a sense of their place degraded physically & morally. Paris: was a city crushed into farmer"s general wall of 1784. Common/ normal for poor and rich to share same building. As time passed, suburbs became a thing: all buildings very haphazard- like shanty towns. 19th century: class segregation by neighborhood, real estate speculation & gentrification, apartments became the norm, by 1830s, all the apartments had become pretty. 6-8 storey apartment buldings- around central and west paris: the poor had moved to north & east, housing there was literally medieval, completely inadequate. Serious housing shortage: various factories, because of the reconstruction (of the city), the number of houses decreased while the population increased. Serious gridlock in the streets: no direct route across the city. Streets were too narrow: response to: popular unrest poor economy.
