Several types of monks: live in communities, some live as individuals, pulling away from the rest of society. With the recognition of christianity in 4th century, the hermitic monks grew in size. Western monks were celibate married to the church: they were single but lived in communities. Alan harding founds a new form of benedictine cistercians (abbey at citeaux: seems to be around 1099 (nobody"s really too sure) You go to a monastery, you give up all of your worldly goods. Cistercians would go to lords and ask for their poorest land, not the best stuff, they"d make it work: cheaper way of buying eternal salvation for the lords, even lesser nobles could do it now.
