Imperium, the power conferred to magistrates, gives them ability to do whatever they want within their rank. Consuls are most important, preators given type of imperium, control over everything but the consuls. State religion, holders of imperium can take the auspices, gives them power to interfere in everything, though not religious officials. Gives them power over other states, outside of italy, and individuals in all thous states. Power to lead armed forces, legions and auxiliaries. Convene courts of law and act as magistrate in those courts. Gives them right to punish others, if lictors carry axes, can carry out capital punishment. When holder of imperium gives it up at end, if he doesn"t live up to edicts at start of terms can be prosecuted. Any matter concerning the state a holder of imperium has right to intervene or make suggestions. Some holders given maius imperium, greater imperium" to stop some holders from coming into conflict.
