Document Summary

_____________________________________________________________________________: the social needs children seek out and expect from their friendships change from early to middle childhood. Cooperative play : there is a stronger preference for same-sex friendships in middle childhood (relative to early childhood). For instance, in middle childhood, friendship selection is based more on sex than any other variable (i. e. , a peer"s age or race): interactional differences in same-sex friendships are more pronounced in middle childhood (relative to early childhood). These interactional differences are the result of children"s growing understanding and conformity to gender rules/norms. When girls interact in same-sex friendships, an enabling style can be observed. When boys interact in same-sex friendships, a restricting or constricting style can be observed: in middle childhood, physical aggression decreases but relational and retaliatory aggression increase. 2 -3 years of age is the peak in physical aggression. 50% of preschoolers (2 3 year olds) showed occasional aggression. 10 year olds 50% show infrequence aggression.
