Perception: the process by which indivs organize and interpret their impressions to give meaning to their env: what we perceive can be substantially different from objective reality. Ppls behavior is based on their perception of what reality is, not on reality itself. Can be hard to change ppls minds once they have particular perceptions when given contrary evidence. Factors influencing perception: a number of factors operate to shape and sometimes distort perception; these factors can reside in the perceiver, in the object, or in the target being perceived. The perceiver: your interpretation heavily influenced by your personal characteristics ie attitudes, personality, motives, interests, past experiences, expectations. The target: novelty, motion, sound, size and other characteristics of a target shape the way we see it; also the relationship of the target to its background. The situation: time at which we see an object or event, location, light, heat, or any number of situational factors can influence perception.
