Document Summary
Lecture 22 - introduction to the land plants. One phase of the life cycle has vascular tissues (ex. xylem, phloem) Tracheophytes: tracheo (from tracheids - water conducting cell type, phyte = plant. Photosynthetic pigments: chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids. Molecular systematics: compares dna - shows genetically related, eg, same genes coding for pigments. At 450(475) mya, 3 groups evolved: mosses, liverworts, hornworts. Angiosperms - most evolutionarily advanced plant group - rose, canola, wheat, tulips, etc. Haplodiplontic life cycle or alteration of generations": sporophyte. Sporo = produces through, phyte = plant. Derived from a zygote (1st sporophyte cell) by mitosis. Life cycle function: w/in sporangia diploid sporocyte cells, gametophyte. Derived by mitosis from a haploid spore". Spores germinate to produce a multicellular phase - the gametophyte. Life cycle function: w/in gametangia produces gametes, gametes are produced by mitosis. Eg. archegonia (female gametangia: egg cells produced by mitosis. Antheridia (male gametangia: sperm cells produced by mitosis. Large, non-motile gamete: egg ( female)
