Behaviour (both overt beh we see and covert that we cant see) derives from motive forces in the person. Physics: dynamids is the study of forces that produce motion or action. The 4 other theories in chapt 2 and 3 are in the lineage of this paradigm: 3 ego psych"s and 1analytic psych by. Freud: the mind = scientific object (like body parts) but isn"t corporeal (doesn"t have substance like body parts do) Treating mind like material = explains how ppl are captive to wishes/urges/inhibitions that drive their beh. There is a conflict between people"s motives demanding constant gratification and society"s control about when ppl may satisfy their motives. Strong motives + having society"s rules internalized in your psychology = psycho-distress. Personality: find realistic ways of ensuring gratification and impose restrains where necessary.
