Document Summary
Scientific method- most objective way to acquire knowledge. Applied- (practical) study to solve an immediate, practical problem. Willingness to change- when you collect contradictive data (may contradict a theory), you have to disregard the theory. Naturalistic observation- more natural, but problems with wait and observe bias. Not trying to affect behavior (ex: hiding in the bushes, observing recess) Case study- great detail but problems with generalizability. Surveys- can be fast & cheap, but can be affected by wording and context (sample should be representative of population) Coefficient indicates strength and direction of relationship between 2 variables (ex: class absences go up = class grades go down) On a plot: positive inclines to the right, negative inclines to the left (direction decides if pos. Stress could lead to illness / illness could lead to stress. Could have mutual effects, 3rd factor could underlie both stress + illness. Control group- allows group to compare treatment group (isn"t exposed to independent variables)
