The french seigneurial changed because of the land, it was a social rather than an economic system. There wasn"t enough people for it to be economic. The canadian peasant called themselves inhabitants instead of citizens. The roman catholic church was built from the bottom up. The parish level was the effective, there was little power at the top. The class structure was more fluid, and there was pretty much only two classes. After 1730 there was almost constant warfare till 1769. A priest was well educated, a local leader, had economica and a social role as well as religious roles. Priests could draw up wills and contracts since there were no lawyers. The tithe of 1/26 of grain so the crown had to pay the. Roman catholic church in order to support parishes (fees for mass, births, marriages, etc. ) Priests were important but didn"t dominate everyday life. The church established and ran schools and hospitals.
