Recognized social position that a person occupies (gender, ethnicity, job) Status is hierarchical, some jobs are ranked higher than others. People usually have a mix of statuses. Status set = all statuses someone has. Part of status; behaviours and attitude associated with a particular status. One holds a status, one plays a role. Role set refers to all the roles attached to a status. Role strain: conflict between roles in a single status, internal. Ex. you see another student cheating. you"re supposed to report it, but you don"t want to rat them out. Being expected to do two different things that aren"t compatible. Role conflict: conflict between roles in multiple statuses.
