The building blocks of personality disorders: traits, emotions, cognitions, motives, interpersonal behaviour, & self-concepts, personality disorders can be thought of as maladaptive variations/combinations of normal personality traits, emotions, motives, etc. What is abnormal: statistical approach-> what is different from normal, what is rare is abnormal, social approach -> behaviours that society deems unacceptable, psychological approach, psychopathology- study of mental disorders. No changes, dsm-5 maintains categorical model of personality disorders and retains the criteria for 10 specific personality disorders. What is a personality disorder: personality disorder- an enduring pattern of experience & behaviour that differs greatly from the expectations of the individual"s culture. The erratic cluster: ways of being unpredictable, violent or emotions tend to have trouble with emotional control & to have specific difficulties getting along with others often appear dramatic & emotional & are unpredictable. 4 disorders: antisocial, borderline, histrionic, & narcissistic personality disorders. Antisocial personality disorder childhood with behavioural problems -> become established pattern.
