Document Summary

Dread risks low probability events that are highly publicized, has dire consequences, affects reasoning and decision making. After 9/11, number of people who die in car accidents per year exceeds those who die in airplane disasters. Cognitive psychology originally cased on notion that brain represents information and act of thinking is cognition. Cognition manipulation of representations, mental activity such as thinking and representing information to understand objects that we occur in environment. Two basic types of representations: analogical characteristics of actual objects. Ex: family trees, maps: symbolic words/ideas, abstract, doesn"t have relationship to physical qualities of, no relationship to object it names. Ex: violin" doesn"t look like a violin. When retrieving information from memory (ex. picture in news), representation of picture in mind parallels representation in brain. Mental image not perfectly accurate; corresponds to physical object it represents. If something can"t be perceived by perceptual system, can"t form complete analogical representation. Mental maps mix of analogical/symbolic representations.
