Document Summary

**chapter 6 is usually difficult b-pleated sheets- silk (clothes) a-helix -carotene in hair, feather, nails. Thalidomide : drug that led to human birth defects. No human test were performed before the drug was released. The effects were dispersed at the same rate the new drug was. In 1950"s women that were pregnant were given this drug. Contained stereoisomers, one worked fine and stopped morning sickness. Nucleotide(monomer) -> phosphate group, pentose sugar, nitrogenous base. Condensations happen between two nucleotide, phosphodiester linkage c-o-p-o-c. C #3 oh is involved in bonding with next nucleotide. Overhead slide (be able to tell apart nitrogenous bases) uracil, adenine, guanine, cytosine. Genetic code: one specific sequence of base pairs forms one gene. Nitrogenous bases point to the center of the double helix. Sugar-phosphate backbone is hydrophilic and nitrogenous bases are hydrophobic. Each strand of dna can serve as a template for the formation of a new strand.
